The term "Deepfake" is a combination of the words Deep Learning (a branch of Artificial Intelligence) and Fake. It refers to any synthetic multimedia content (videos, audio, or images) that has been modified or generated with such a level of realism that it is extremely difficult to distinguish from the original.
Deep learning is the key AI technology behind deepfakes. It relies on multi-layered neural networks that process massive amounts of data to accurately learn the subtlest patterns in a person's appearance and voice. This comprehensive learning is what enables the hyper-realistic reconstruction of identity in fake videos and audio recordings.
Deepfakes pose a significant threat due to their ability to spread misinformation, manipulate public opinion, and commit fraud. They can be used to create fake news, impersonate identities, and conduct social engineering attacks, putting privacy, security, and trust in digital media at risk.
Deepfakes are mainly divided into three techniques that seek to deceive the eye and ear:
Replacing one person's face with another's in videos or images.
Audio generation that imitates the voice of a specific person.
Modification of expressions and movements to change the message conveyed.
